Record three for Atlas Sound is further proof that the band – i.e. one man performance project Bradford Cox – occupies rarified air in these troubled musical times. Despite leading the prolific Deerhunter, Cox also helms and haws this equally productive baby, the outlet acting as a fine tuning of his popular music tastes that are refined here to sweet sing-alongs and toe tappers, nary too much weirdness or murk in sight. While sticking mainly to the tall crooner fronting a crack indie-pop backing band format, Cox and co. permit themselves the odd deviation into electronic blips and Latin tinges, but it’s his ability to tackle a permeated medium and re-surface with something meaningful that’s all the worth. March 7th at Cabaret du Mile-End.
