The Budos Band, which release on Daptone (the same label as Sharon Jones), are deliciously funky, mixing up jazz, soul and horns in a way that sounds more like African music than American (or African-American). Which is not surprising since their instrumental “afro-soul” is inspired by Ethiopian music. Complex, narrative and deeply groovy, this album is pretty hard to resist, with its laid back grooves that brilliantly showcase the horns. This album may be inspired by afro-grooves of all kinds and eras, but the deeper you listen, the more quirky little aural treats and sonic influences it throws up. October 2nd at Club Lambi.
