Palimpsest: free love and a secular miracle

According to its website, Palimpsest is a “heterogeneous anthology of multiples; an unbound magazine comprised of print, audio, textile, video, etc tied together through design.”

What exactly does that mean? I asked myself the same question, but I think the point here is that Palimpsest’s creators wanted to touch upon multiple artistic forms without limiting themselves in the slightest. So if their website and event descriptions sound broad, it’s probably intentional.

Secular Miracle is a vernissage being hosted this Friday at OFF Interarts in the Mile End. The schedule is packed with enough music, video, printed matter, audio, light and projection numbers to keep guests entertained for hours. Material from Palimpsest’s past issue and upcoming second issue will be previewed.

Beer will be sold for cheap and admission will be free until 8 p.m., after which there will be a cover charge. Highlights of the launch include GRIMES, a one-of-a-kind musical project, and exhibits by local artists Willie Brisco and Craig Fahner.

Also on the agenda are plenty of artist video screenings, a performance by local band D’EON, projections by Jacqueline Lachance and a dance party with DJs Mitz Takahashi and Abs.

Even though its message might still need some retooling, I commend Palimpsest for throwing itself head on into the saturated magazine jungle and presenting material Montreal hasn’t already seen a thousand times before.
