Fringe Festival: beloved performing arts fest not a girl, not yet a woman at 20

Our beloved Fringe Fest celebrates 20 years of dance animals, cop thrillers, supervillain sagas and transcendental masturbation with a 20-day freak show in June. The rules haven’t changed: artists, selected by lottery, get carte blanche to mount whatever whacked out production they’ve been itching to do. Attending the Fringe is always a gamble, as you never know whether the weird contortionist shows, the creepy titles (last year’s “Fucking Stephen Harper”, anyone?) or the plays about dishwashing and dick jokes are worth your while. So NIGHTLIFE singled out five potentially fun and/or debaucherous offerings to enjoy in between trips to the beer tents.

LA DANSE DES CANARDS
Euh, not. Oui, il y a de la danse, peut-être même des canards, mais La Femme Canard est assurément à des années-lumière de la chorégraphie tata qu’on fait à la garderie (ou dans une cabane à sucre un peu plus tard dans sa vie.) En deux mots (disons six): un homme recherche éperdument sa femme-canard. Racines: un vieux mythe inuit. Et parce qu’on est en 2010: le band Grub Animal splashera ses gouttes new wave, live on stage, au profit de ce voyage lyrique. (MMF)

OCEANIC FANTASTIC
After winning the Prix Chapters pour meilleur texte français at 2008’s Fringe, the Belzébrute gang returns with an English translation of their critically acclaimed show. Actors, puppets, masks and shadows recount the nautical adventures of Shavirez, a gypsy searching for his destiny on the high seas. Full of humour and wit, Shavirez is a theatrical frenzy of wanderlust, duels, sex and revenge. This is storytelling at its best. (MAH)

En deux mots: absurde et désaxant (mon chef de pupitre m’a envoyé un clip YouTube et je suis toujours, à ce jour, aussi perturbée.) Titre YouTube: 《《小心ズ》YouTubeネタバトル Racines: Tokyoïtes. Explication québécoise: deux French maids avec des faces de geishas se font aller la tête, l’âme et le derrière en synchro sur une musique à la Dance Dance Revolution. (MMF)

IMMACULATE GELATIN VISION
Forget Veronica’s veil, and bear witness to the divine intervention of Jesus Jello: The Miraculous Confection. After Miles Wilson sees the face of Jesus in a bowl of hospital desserts, his family embarks on a carnavalesque journey of exploitation worthy of the greatest tabloids. All this hubris and hoopla leads to an earnest question: who could possibly have a bigger God complex than God himself? (MAH)

LES GARÇONNES
Elles sont quatre et elles interprètent la même femme. Elle s’appelle Mignonne et elle est incapable d’accepter la simplicité du quotidien. En deux mots (disons six): ce ne sera pas toujours mignon. Explication plus professionnelle: cette pièce est une véritable porte ouverte sur l’intimité d’une femme. Commentaire inutile à nous faire: coup don’, c’est-tu une affaire de féministes frustrées?!
