The combination of the words «student» and «bar» are seldom an encouraging proposition but, in this case, the exception proves to be the rule. L’Abreuvoir, situated in the old Baloo space on Ontario East (but not too far East that you have to worry about getting stabbed in the eye with a hypodermic), is a worthy alternative for university and CEGEP types who have grown weary of Saint Sulpice or, to a lesser extent, Passeport.
The launch last September set the stage for what looks to be a very promising endeavour: aRTIST oF tHE yEAR, Qualité Motel (Misteur Valaire), Mad’moizelle Giraf and others were on hand to get things off to a good start, and that’s only a taste of things to come.
Besides the economically priced hooch, l’Abreuvoir is also to be commended for providing a much-needed outlet for a surfeit of local talent. There’s a dearth of venues is this city, and to support the scene as they do is badge of honour particularly for those who care the most (hint: if you can afford to put a down payment on a condo, it’s not you).
